DVN (Decentralized Verifier Network)
In LayerZero, an independent verifier that checks a cross-chain message on the source chain and attests to it on the destination chain; each application configures how many DVNs must agree before a message is accepted.
A DVN is LayerZero's name for a cross-chain verifier. When an application on one chain sends a message, each DVN it has configured watches the source chain, confirms the message was really emitted, and attests to it on the destination chain. The destination side only delivers the message once the required DVNs have attested.
The security of a route depends on that configuration. An application chooses which DVNs it requires and how many must agree, and it can set different requirements per route. With a single required DVN (a 1-of-1 setup), one compromised key, one poisoned data source or one bug in that verifier is enough to deliver a message that was never sent. In April 2026, a route with a 1-of-1 configuration released 116,500 rsETH, about $292M, for exactly such a message.
The same principle applies to any cross-chain verifier set, whatever the protocol calls it: require two or more independent verifiers, run by different parties and reading different data, on every route that moves value, and back them with a per-route rate limit or circuit breaker for the case where verification still fails.
